The spread of novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) in Nigeria has continued to rise rapidly as the latest statistics provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control revealed Nigeria now has 7,016 confirmed cases.
On the 21st of May 2020, 339 new confirmed cases and 11 deaths were recorded in Nigeria to date, 7016 cases have been confirmed, 1907 cases have been discharged and 211 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory having carried out 40,043 tests.
The 339 new cases were reported from 18 states- Lagos (139), Kano (28), Oyo (28), Edo (25), Katsina (22), Kaduna (18), Jigawa (14), Yobe (13), Plateau (13), FCT (11), Gombe (8), Ogun (5), Bauchi (4), Nasarawa (4), Delta (3), Ondo (2), Rivers (1), Adamawa (1).
In a move to combat the spread of the pandemic disease, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days, which took effect from 11 pm on Monday, 30th March 2020.
The movement restriction, which was extended by another two-weeks period, has been partially put on hold with some businesses commencing operations from May 4. The latest numbers bring Lagos state total confirmed cases to 3093, followed by Kano (875), Abuja at 446, Katsina (303), Borno (235), Bauchi (228), Jigawa (225), Oyo (190), Ogun (183), Kaduna (170), Edo and Gombe (144), Sokoto (113), Rivers (80), Zamfara (76), Plateau (70).Kwara State has recorded 66 cases, Yobe (45), Osun (42), Nasarawa (38), Kebbi (32), Delta (31), Adamawa (27), Ondo and Niger (22), Ekiti (20), Akwa Ibom and Taraba (18), Enugu (16), Ebonyi (13), Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa (7), while Benue and Anambra states have each recorded 5 cases.
